Leuer leads Big Lake runners at STMA Invite

Jack Leuer was the individual champion and the Big Lake boys varsity finished sixth as a team at the STMA Invitational cross country meet against 11 other schools last Wednesday.

Leuer crossed the finish line in 15:49.80, 17 seconds ahead of second-place Elijah Donaldson of Eden Prairie. It was Leuer’s fastest time this season.

Big Lake’s next three runners finished within six seconds of each other. Gavin Flavin took 32nd in 17:19.80. Trent Erickson placed 34th in 17:20.80 and Judd Layton was 39th in 17:25.90. Theo Johnson took 56th in 18:06.80 to round out the scoring.

Big Lake’s sixth and seventh finishers were Eli Henning (62nd, 18:21.30) and Jack Schmidt (76th 19:27.90).

Greta Layton led the girls varsity The eighth-grader placed 24th in 20:16.90. Campbell Slattery finished 55th in 22:31.20. Erin Kjellberg was 65th in 24:48.60.

Big Lake’s next three finishers had all moved up from the middle school event and did well for the team. Elsie Jagusch took 67th in 24:57.30, followed by Clara Devine (68th, 25:05.10) and Hazel Guldseth (69th, 25:10.10).

Logan Phillips had the best time for the Hornet middle school boys, placing 10th in 11:50.1 to lead the team to a fifth-place finish. Logan Lundt took 17th in 12:03.2. Next was Jamisen Nusbaum in 23rd in 12:28.1, followed by Wyatt Winslow (28th, 12:55.1) and Jasper Blakeny (32nd, 13:10.2).

Macey Lingle had the best finish for the middle school girls, placing 36th in 15:14.9. Sixth-grader Ainsley McGuire took 41st in 15:45.0. Emily Stokes was next in 44th in 16:11.6, followed by Hannah Talvitie (59th, 18:15.1) and Natalie McCormack (67th, 22:17.6).

The Hornets competed in the Princeton Invitational Tuesday at Princeton Golf Course, results next week. They run against eight other schools in the conference meet 3 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 15) at Bertram Regional Park in Monticello.
