The Becker Legion baseball team’s season came to an end last week in the second round of playoffs against Cambridge in St. Francis.
Cambridge 7, Becker 5
Matthew Moe started on the mound for Becker, going 8-1/3 innings. Weston Schug came on in relief in the ninth to close out the ballgame.
In a tight, scoreless game, Becker got things going in the bottom of the third inning, loading the bases with two outs. Unfortunately, they were unable to push a run across the plate and the game remained 0-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Becker again had a rally going with runners on second and third with one out. Again, they were thwarted and unable to score.
Cambridge came up in the top of the fifth and were finally able to light up the scoreboard when they tallied three runs. A costly error did much of the damage against the Bulldogs in that inning.
Becker came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and hit three consecutive singles with one out to load the bases. Kreeden Blomquist hit a deep ball to center, which scored the first run of the game for Becker. The Bulldogs stranded the other two runners and after six innings, the game was 3-1 in favor of Cambridge.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs got thir lead-off batter on with a walk, followed by a single and a sacrifice bunt by Moe. In usual fashion, Becker was unable to come up with a big hit and Cambridge shut them down to preserve their slim lead.
The slim lead grew in the top of the eighth when Cambridge broke the game open with four runs on four hits, a walk and an error.
With the game and their season on the line, Becker gave one final push in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases. Mason Seeley came in to pinch hit and drove a deep ball down into the left corner of the field, scoring three runs to make it 7-4. Becker managed to score one more run in the inning on a single by Zach Wenner, but that was as close as they’d get.
“Becker came up short like they did most of their games through the season,” said Coach Kevin Krenz.
Becker finished with 13 hits and five runs with Kendal Hanson leading the team with three hits. Schug, Zach Wenner and Matt Krenz each had two hits and Noah Mohs, Dawson Hill, Seeley and Zach Davidson each had one.
Princeton 5, Becker 1
In the first round of sections last Tuesday, the Bulldogs took on the #3-seeded Princeton Tigers and lost by four. The game was played at Mark Park Field in Princeton.
Hanson was the starting pitcher for Becker.
Becker gave up one run in the bottom of the first inning on an error.
The Bulldogs loaded the bases in the top of the second, but was unable to put a run across the plate.
In the top of the third with two outs, Mohs drove a ball deep to left center for a triple and advanced home on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, Princeton came up with two runs on a double by Larson.
The Tigers would seal the deal with one more run in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the bottom of eighth.
Krenz went 3-for-4 for Becker. Mohs, Schug and Hill each had two hits and Seeley finished 1-for-1.
