Legion team goes 1-2

The Big Lake Legion baseball team went 1-2 this past week, losing a doubleheader to the Princeton Tigers last Thursday, and eking out a thriller against St. Augusta June 29.

Princeton 7, Big Lake 1

Princeton jumped out quickly by scoring three times in the top of the first. They added another two in the fifth before Big Lake responded with one in the sixth.

Princeton capped off the game with two more runs in the seventh to seal the deal.

Keenan Hjermstad went all seven innings for Big Lake on the mound, giving up 10 hits, seven runs and one walk. He struck out two batters and his defense behind him committed three errors.

In the sixth, D Robeck walked and advanced to second on a single by C Stern. Hjermstad grounded into fielder’s choice, second baseman Johanson to shortstop Minks. Robeck scored on the play.

Big Lake mustered just three hits off Princeton’s Beltrand, who went all seven innings giving up the three hits, one walk, one run and struck out six.

Princeton 8, Big Lake 5

In game two of the doubleheader, Princeton again jumped out to the lead with two runs in the first and one in the second before Big Lake tied it up with one in the third and two in the fourth. Big Lake would eventually take a short-lived lead in the fifth, but Princeton tied in the bottom half of the inning, then tallied four in the final innning to complete the sweep.

In the third, Big Lake got their first run when C Brown and A Payne walked, then moved up a couple bases on a sacrifice bunt by J Wanhala. Robeck flew out and Brown scored on the tag.

With the score 3-1, Big Lake tied the game when I Terlinden reached on an infield error and K Haselius walked to put runners on first and second. The runners moved up a base when the Princeton pitcher  threw a wild pitch. Stern singled to score Terlinden and Haselius advanced to third. J Tschritter grounded out, allowing  Haselius to score. After Stern was caught stealing, K Hjermstad singled, Payne walked and J Wanhala struck out swinging.

In the fifth, Big Lake got their first lead when S Schlegel reached on catcher’s interference and eventually stole second, then third before scoring on a Terlinden fly out.

Princeton would again tie the game at four, but Big Lake re-took the lead in the sixth when Hjermstad walked and stole second. He advanced to third on a balk by the Princeton pitcher and scored when Payne grounded into a fielder’s choice.

Princeton would score four in the bottom of the seventh to steal the win.

Big Lake 7, St. Augusta 5

June 29, Big Lake hosted St. Augusta and pulled out the victory with a late game rally.

St. Augusta jumped out to the lead in the seond with a single run, but Big Lake responded with two in the bottom half. St. Augusta put up a crooked number (four) in the top of the third to go up 5-2 before Big Lake rallied for two in the bottom of the fourth and three in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win.

In the second, S. Schlegel reached first on an error and stole second. He moved up a base on a wild pitch, then scored on a Terlinden single. Stukenholtz came in as a courtey runner for Terlinden and he proceeded to steal second and advanced to third on a fly out. He eventually scored on a wild pitch to put Big Lake up 2-1.

After St. Augusta scored four times to move ahead 5-2 in the third, 

In the fourth, Stern drove in two on a single to bring the score to 5-4, then Big Lake tied the game with another run in the sixth when Terlinden walked (courtesy runner Stukenholtz) and stole second. Haselius hit a ground ball and reached on an error by shortstop N Bloom. Stukenholtz scored on the play.

After Stern struck out, Haselius advanced to second on an error and to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an error by the catcher to put Big Lake up by a score of 6-5. Stukenholtz walked and stole second and scored on a Wanhala single to record the final tally of 7-5.

Terlinden went six innings on the mound, giving up just three hits but had five walks. He struck out five batters and gave up all five runs.
