Lacrosse Girls Go 2 2 To End Regular Season

The Becker Bulldog girls lacrosse team closed out their regular season this week, going 2-2 and finishing at 6-7.

Orono 11, Becker 7
Last Friday, Becker hosted the Orono Spartans and started the match strong, faded in the middle and finished strong. However, they couldn’t overcome the final four-goal deficit.

Jessie Charbonneau scored for Becker seven minutes into the game through a heap of players in front of the Orono goaltender. Orono quickly responded and dominated the rest of the half, scoring eight unanswered goals to end the half at 8-1.

The Bulldogs came out of halftime and began to show life. They scored the first three goals of the final period to bring it to 8-4, but Orono squashed their hopes of a comeback by scoring three more times. Hugh Hovde’s team didn’t show any quit as they attacked in the final few minutes and put a scare in the Spartans, but their lead held up as the buzzer sounded.

Scoring for Becker were Reilly Cencer and Rachel Eisenreich with two goals apiece, and Charbonneau, Allison Zimmer and Daisy Kent with one goal each.

Becker 17, Grand Rapids 1
Putting the Orono game behind them, Becker traveled to Grand Rapids last Saturday for a match against a brand new MSHSL team.

Early on, it was apparent Becker would control the game as the action tilted towards the GR goal all day.

Eleven Bulldogs found the score sheet with five players getting multipole goals. Zimmer, Kent, Sydney Stommes, Bria Amundson, Kinsley Hurt and Sydney Bordson all tallied two goals. Cencer, Charbonneau, Hannah Bengtson, Brookelyn Beutz, Macy Eigen and Stommes all had one goal each.

Becker 12, Mound Westonka 6
The Bulldogs remained on the road Tuesday as they took on the Mound Westonka White Hawks.

“Mound Westonka and Becker started their lacrosse programs at the same time and over the years have been evenly matched,” said head Coach Hugh Hovde.

This year, the game belonged to Becker.

The White Hawks got on the board early with a goal at 21:30. Becker responded after Beutz took the ball to the goal and scored from a teammate’s perfect pass. That kick-started a four-goal spree before MWT answered with two goals to make it 4-3 with eight minutes left in the first half.

The Bulldogs kicked things up and scored four goals in that time frame to end the half at 8-3 in favor of the blue and white.

Kent was phenomenal, tallying half of Becker’s goals in the first period.

The two teams traded goals back-and-forth in the second half and Zimmer put the nail in the coffin with a goal at 31 seconds to seal the deal at 12-6.

STMA 15, Becker 11
The girls came home Thursday for their final regular season game and hosted the Knights on a warm, partly cloudy evening.

STMA, a higher-ranked team in the MSHSL, came out flat-footed, allowing Becker to score early and often. Kinsley Hurt put the first two goals on the board for Becker and it was 3-0 before STMA was able to get a goal of their own minutes later. The rest of the first half was a series of trading goals one for the other until STMA scored the three goals in the waning of the half to lead by one at 8-7.

However, the Bulldogs tied it at 1:03 left when Stommes scored with a blistering shot to the excited cheers of the faithful fans.

STMA made some major adjustments and came out with a more physical game in the final half. They got Becker off their game and immediately scored five goals to take a big lead. The Bulldogs played hard through the onslaught, scoring three goals themselves, but couldn’t overtake the Knights by the buzzer.

“Our girls played hard right to the very end,” said Hovde. They showed a lot of skill and sportsmanship tonight and throughout the season. I’m very proud at how far they progressed as a team this year.”

Scoring for the Bulldogs were Amundson with three, Hurt with two and Cencer, Zimmer, Beutz, Eigen, Kent and Stommes with one goal apiece.
