Janssen Heading To State Championships

Kami Janssen of Becker competed in nine different events over the period of two hot days at the Sherburne County Fair in July.

She won the Junior High Point Grand Championship for the games category and qualified for a trip to the State Horse Show Sept. 13-15 at the State Fair Grounds.

Kami, 15, and her Pintabian horse named Montana, will compete against youths from all across the state in her age group (ninth grade last year) who also won at their respective county fairs.

The events she’ll be participating in are pole weaving, jumping figure eight, key hole and barrels.

Kami won reserve champion on her horse project, which she will also take to the state horse show next month. She also made a rope halter and a display with step-by-step instructions as to how she did it.

Kami will also be on a  senior team with two other Sherburne County youths as they compete in Hippology at the sate show. Hippology consists of taking an individual written exam, stations(a timed series of stations asking anything from id’ing different types of saddles to the ages of equines bases on their teeth), judging (they look at six different sets of horses and rank these) and team problem (each team has the same amount of time to confer and present their solution).

Kami has had a passion for horses since she had a concept of what they were, and has been riding now for about seven years.
