Hornets run over Falcons

Senior defensive back, Reid Josewski’s interception with 1:29 left in the fourth quarter sealed a 16-12 Senior Night victory over Foley.

Powered by a strong ground game and timely defense, the Hornets picked up their second win of the season. The offense did their damage on the ground, amassing 317 yards rushing on almost seven yards per carry.

Neither team allowed a score in the first half, but both teams scored twice in the second. The difference in the game was Big Lake converting on both of their two-point attempts and stopping Foley on both of theirs.

With the game tied 0-0 early in the second half, Jose Acuna picked off a Falcon pass and returned it to the opponents 25-yard line. Two plays later Carson Gellerman scored from 21-yards out for the first score of the game. He would also score the two-point try to make the score 8-0.

After that, the two teams traded punts before Foley broke off a 48-yard touchdown run to pull within two points. A great play by Montell Hester on the point after try preserved the Hornet lead.

On the ensuing offensive drive for Big Lake, Jack Midas got behind the Falcon secondary and Gellerman found him for a 25-yard touchdown. The two connected for the two-point conversion as well to make it a two-score game at 16-6. Foley scored once more in the fourth quarter to pull within four points. The Hornets drove the ball down to their opponents 25 and had a chance to ice the game with a first down but the Falcons stopped them on fourth and two.

The Falcons now had the ball with an opportunity to drive down and win the game. But on the third play of their drive, Josewski ranged back and sealed the game with his interception. Two kneel downs later, and the 16-12 victory was official for the Hornets.

Gellerman finished 6-17 passing for 79 yards and a touchdown with 127 yards and a score on the ground. Carter Stromberg was the team’s leading rusher with 145 yards on 20 carries. Midas had a total of five catches for 74 yards and a score.

Braedyn Wemple and Hester each had seven tackles to lead the Hornets. Hester also added a sack. Acuna added six tackles to go along with his interception. Evan Blackman also had six tackles. Seniors Tanner Muenkel, Gavin Jones, and Calvin Morrison had four tackles, two tackles, and one tackle respectively.
