Big Lake hosted the Delano Tigers last Saturday and hung with the 0-1 Tigers for much of the first half.
The second half was a different story, as Delano racked up 21 points in the final 24 minutes to get their first win of the season.
The Hornets got off to a great start when Reed Bottema ran 12 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Unfortunately, Delano would rattle off the next 34 points, en route to an easy win on the road.
Adam Brown plunged from a yard out late in the first quarter to tie the game, then Tate Gallus returned a punt from 54 yards out to put the Tigers in the lead for good. A failed two-pointer meant Delano would lead 13-7 heading into halftime.
Brown found Cade Bruett in the flat at the start of the third quarter and Bruett weaved his way through the Hornet defense for an 81-yard score. This time, the two-pointer was good and the Tigers were enjoying a 21-7 lead.
Not long after, Bruett hit Trey Longstreet from a yard out to put the Tigers up 27-7. The final score for the Tigers — a one yard TD run by Brown — sealed the deal as they went up 34-7 late in the game.
The Hornets didn’t give up and Brandon Stern scored from two-yards out to bring the score to 34-13. With a failed two-point conversion, the game ended in Delano’s favor as the Hornets fell to 0-4.
