The Big Lake wrestling team did well at the Jackhammer Invitational at Pequot Lakes last weekend.
Although they had no individual champions, seven Hornets finished in the top eight in their weight class and Big Lake was fifth of 29 teams at the meet.
Big Lake’s best finish came at 189 pounds, where Carson Gellerman took second. He opened by pinning Eli Abraham of Pequot Lakes at 3:32, then pinned Derek Nason of Blackduck/Cass Lake at 1:59. He beat Jaxon Vetsch of Perham, 8-0, then pinned Tyler Graczyk of Howard Lake-Wavely-Winsted at 3:23. He lost to #1-ranked and undefeated Zak McPhee of Proctor/Hermantown, 3-1 in the championship match.
Cash Stortz (14-2) took third at 133 pounds. After a bye, he pinned Owen Dabill of Pequot Lakes at 4:17. He followed with a 12-2 major decision over Kadin Martin of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley before losing a 5-2 decision to Sean O’Brien of Totino Grace. He pinned Creed Mursu of New York Mills at 0:29 before beating Ayden Hauck of Barnesville, 12-0 in his last match.
Kale Westgaard (13-3) placed fourth at 107 pounds. He opened by with a 15-0 tech fall over Landon Schiffer of Minnewaska. He pinned Alonso Montanez of Sauk Centre/Melrose at 1:02, then pinned Jamison Meagher of Paynesville at 1:34. He lost by tech fall to champion Logan Refsnider of Totino Grace, then beat Judah Perrault of Hutchinson, 4-2 before losing a 12-5 decision to Charles Ikola of Deer River in his final match.
Zach Smith (7-3) finished fifth at 152 pounds. He opened with an 11-2 decision over Payton Herbst of Totino Grace, then pinned Brock Swiers of Detroit Lakes at 1:22. He lost an 8-5 decision to champion Carson Byer of Perham, then beat Wyatt Gullickson of Deer River by 16-1 tech fall. He pinned Kenny Erickson of Aitken at 4:02 before losing a 6-2 decision to Clayton Solberg of Irondale Spring Lake. He beat Owen Carlson of Albany, 12-5 in his final match.
Cooper Cusick (4-3) took seventh at 145 pounds. After a bye, he beat Jose De Los Santos of Sauk Centre/Melrose, 9-4. He lost by pin to Raydon Bipes of Hutchinson, then pinned Jack Ruegesseger of Centennial at 4:14. He lost a 1-0 decision to Beau Somdahl of Detroit Lakes, then pinned Jonny Ramos of Perham at 3:55 in his final match.
Trajan Mussehl (12-8) finished seventh in the heavyweight division. He opened with a pin of Kyler Haugen of Hutchinson at 0:45 before losing by pin to Kale Rich of Otter Tail Central. He pinned Wylder Powers of Hibbing at 0:27, then pinned Grant Miller Paynesville at 1:00. He followed with another pin of Owen Swedberg of Totino Grace at 0:24, then pinned Riley Helgeson of Crookston at 1:25 in his final match.
Dallas Sibbet (9-2) finished eighth at 139 pounds. He pinned Justin Houdek of LPGE at 1:36 in his first match. He beat Tate Evans of Deer River, 13-3 before losing a 14-6 decision to Max Martin of Hutchinson. He beat Jeremy Linn of Detroit Lakes, 20-13 before losing in his final two matches by medical default.
The Hornets had a dual meet against Anoka Thursday, results next week. They compete in an invitational tournament at Rogers Dec. 28-29.
