The Big Lake boys varsity cross country team took third of 14 teams at the ROCORI Invitational last week.
The Hornets were competing without their top runner Jack Leuer, who was resting to run in the Roy Griak Invitational the following day.
But the Hornets still placed three runners in the top 15 spots and managed to finish close behind Fergus Falls and Wayzata.
Gavin Flavin led Big Lake with an eighth place finish in 17:27.60. Next was Trent Erickson in 12th place in 17:34.20. Judd Layton was next in 15th in 17:37.30.
Theo Johnson (32nd, 18:26.30) and Max Baron (52nd, 19:06.10) were the fourth and fifth finishers for the Hornets.
Big Lake’s varsity girls didn’t have a complete team, but Greta Layton led the squad with another outstanding race. The eighth-grader broke the 20-minute mark and took second overall in 19:56.40.
Campbell Slattery was the second Big Lake finisher in 23rd in 21:38.20. Alayna Boe (30:33.90) and Bryn Scheer (31:10.90) rounded out the team.
Gavin Vold ran well in the boys JV 5000 meters and took 19th in 19:27.40.
Jamisen Nusbaum was Big Lake’s top finisher in the boys junior high 3200 meters, taking 30th in 13:14.2.
Aubri Judge led the junior high girls, taking 27th in 15:27.7. Elsie Jagusch was next in 28th in 15:44.1 leading the Hornets to a fifth-place team finish.
The Hornets competed in a meet at Becker Thursday, results next week. They run against 12 other schools at St. Michael Wednesday.
