Hornet gymnasts take first in Elk River

The Big Lake Hornet girls gymnastics team participated in the Dana Hunt Elk River Invite last Saturday in Elk River with eight other teams.

Elk River High School gymnastics coach and art teacher Dana Hunt died of breast cancer at the age of 37 back on Sept. 9, 1995. Four months after her death, on January 20, 1996, the first ever Dana Hunt Memorial Invitational was held in memory of her. The invitational is celebrating 25 years in 2021.

Big Lake’s varsity squad captured first place at the invite, garnering 143.05 points to Wayzata’s 142.45. Elk River/Zimmerman captured third with 137.8 points and Anoka took fourth with 137.4.

Big Lake Varsity finished first on vault and beam, second on bars and floor.

Lola Visci (36.25) won the all-around and Autumn Grunewald (35.4) finished third. 

Britney Krumrei (9.55) took first on vault, Grunewald (9.2) finished third and Visci (9.1) finished fourth.

Visci (9.2) won bars and Katie Goracke (8.4) finished sixth.

Grunewald (9.2) finished second on beam, Sister Amber Grunewald (9.050) finished third.

Krumrei (9.4) finished second on floor, Visci (9.35) tied for third, Amber Grunewald (9.2) tied for fifth and Autumn Grunewald (9.1) tied for sixth.

JV Squad

The Hornet JVers capture first place amongst the competing teams with a score of 129.1. Wayzata was second with 127.2, Monticello was third with 126.15 and Anoka fourth with 123.3.

JV finished sixth on vault, second on bars, first on beam and second on floor.

Hannah Horvath (31.1) took third in the All-Around.

Grace McCrone and Horvath tied for sixth on vault with 8.3.

Amber Grunewald (8.0) took third on bars and Kennadie Ell (7.9) took fourth.

On beam, Big Lake took four of the top five spots. Allie Lu (8.7) first, Sam Merten (8.15) second, Grace McCrone and Horvath tied for fourth scoring 8.0.

Katie Goracke (8.5) placed third on floor, Allie Goracke (8.45) was fourth and McCrone (8.4) was fifth.

“The girls looked great for their first meet of the season,” said Head Coach Lanny Goldsmith. “They fought through some nerves and performed incredibly well in front of a big crowd at Elk River High School. This meet showcased some top teams in the state as well. I’m very proud of their effort and the focus they showed today. They never got too high or low and supported each other throughout the entire meet.”
