Hornet baseball team ends regular season with 2 wins

The Big Lake baseball team ended its regular season with two more wins last week. The Hornets finished with four straight wins to bring their overall season record to 9-8.

Last Thursday, Jackson Laroche pitched his second straight strong game as Big Lake beat Milaca, 4-1.

The Hornets weren’t putting together many scoring chances early in the game. They finally pushed a run across in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead.

Milaca got a run back off Laroche in the home sixth before Brendan Goedker came in to retire the side.

Big Lake broke the game open in the top of the seventh with three runs on three hits, and Goedker retired the Wolves without allowing a run in the home seventh to pick up the win in relief.

At the plate, Isaiah Terlinden had a single, a walk, scored a run and drove in one. Laroche had a double, a walk and an RBI. Goedker doubled and drove in a run. Owen Wilczek drove in a run and Cooper Cusick walked twice and scored a run.

On the mound, Laroche allowed one earned run on one hit in five innings. He walked five and struck out four. Goedker allowed no runs, two hits and a walk. He struck out three.

Last Monday, Owen Wilczek pitched his second consecutive complete game shutout as Big Lake beat Chisago Lakes, 5-0.

The Hornets started scoring early with a run in the first, two in the second and another in the third for a 4-0 lead. They got their final run in the sixth.

That was more than enough for Wilczek, who dominated the Chisago Lakes batters on the mound. He allowed just one hit, didn’t walk a batter and struck out 13.

At the plate, Jeffery Wanhala singled and drove in two runs. Laroche had a hit and drove in a run. Terlinden singled, scored a run and drove in one. Trenton Throolin doubled and scored a run. Cusick, Jaxyn Tschritter and Jason Skoglund each scored a run.

The Hornets were scheduled to play at Princeton in first round of the double-elimination section tournament Tuesday. Their second game was Thursday, results next week.
