Two former Bulldog athletes have been announced as winners of this year’s GEL Scholarships, in memory of the late Jerry Lindbom.
They are Alexa Hanowski, who has completed her first year at Bethel University in St. Paul, and Luke Lahr, who will be a junior this fall at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
Alexa, a 2016 BHS graduate, participated in volleyball, basketball and softball, starting at second base, in her first year.
She will be continuing her sports career at Bethel this year in volleyball and softball.
She is pursing a degree in biology with a minor in chemistry in the Pre-Veterinary program. She hopes to attend a graduate school for veterinarians once she graduates from Bethel in 2020.
Luke Lahr, the son of Tammy Sandy and Al Lahr, is a 2015 graduate of BHS and a recipient of the Lindbom scholarship last year.
He holds a 3.70 GPA and is majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in business administration. He anticipates graduating in May, 2019.
He has competed in cross country and indoor and outdoor track for the UMD Bulldogs.
In outdoor track, he achieved top ten all-time honors at UMD in both the 5000 meters and 10,000 meters. He competed in the NSIC meet for both indoor and outdoor and placed sixth in the outdoor NSIC Conference meet in the 5000 meter.
He also does intramural sports such as floor hockey and volleyball.
The scholarships, in the amount of $500, have been presented the two student athletes by Anita Lindbom in honor of her late husband.
