Gellerman leads Hornet wresters at state tourney

Four members of the Big Lake wrestling team finished their 2023-2024 season at the state wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center last weekend.

Carson Gellerman had the best finish for the Hornets. The junior placed third at 189 pounds after qualifying by winning the Section 6AA title a week earlier.

Gellerman (36-7) opened the tournament by pinning Carson McCain of New London-Spicer at 1:07. He followed by pinning Casey Macziewski of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton at 1:14. He suffered his only loss in the next round, losing to Evan McGuire of Mahtomedi, 8-4. He beat Danny Martin of Simley, 5-0, then pinned Dylan Thomas of Scott West at 4:55 to earn the third place spot.

Cash Stortz (44-4) did not place at 127 pounds. He was unfortunate to wrestle undefeated champion Christian Jelle (46-0) of Grand Rapids in his opening match, which he lost by tech fall, 17-1. Stortz came back to pin Ty Berchold of South Saint Paul at 1:19 in his next match, but lost by pin to Parker Zutter of Pequot Lakes-Pine River in his final match.

Zach Smith (23-13) had a good start at 152 pounds. The senior opened with an 8-5 win over Jack Entiger of Watertown-Mayer. But he lost a close match to Carson Byer of Perham, 6-5 in his next match. He lost to Michael Amos of Chisago Lakes, 9-7 in his final match.

Junior Charles Mikely (34-17) lost by pin to Sam Rock of Luverne at 5:56 in his opening match at 172 pounds. He was pinned by Tanner Eizen of Stewartville at 4:47 in his second match.
