The Becker Bulldog girls lacrosse team went 2-1 this week with wins over Spring Lake Park and Robbinsdale Cooper and a loss to Delano.
Becker 11, Cooper 5
Last Friday, Becker traveled to Robbinsdale Cooper and came home with a six-point win.
Becker scored first and took control of the game early. Seven players scored for Becker, with Ali Zimmer leading the way with four goals.
Delano 13, Becker 8
The Bulldogs hosted the Tigers Tuesday afternoon and lost by five.
Delano and Becker’s records matched up pretty even as both teams came into the matchup with just two wins on the year.
Becker got off to a slow start and could only tally two goals in the first half. By halftime, the Tigers held a 5-2 lead and all the momentum.
In the second half, Becker started scoring and eventually tied the contest with 11:37 minutes left in the game.
Then the scoring drought that has plagued Becker all year struck again.
Becker’s final tally of the game was meaningless as it came with just under a minute left to play.
Meanwhile, Delano was able to net five more goals on the board and waltz away with an easy win.
Daisy Kent and Zimmer each scored three goals for Becker.
“This was a frustrating game,” said Head Coach Hugh Hovde. “The girls worked hard to tie it up and then to have it slip away. It’s tough.”
Becker 9, SLP 8 (OT)
Thursday’s game at home started out slow scoring-wise as both teams played up-and-down the field lacrosse until SLP eventually built a 2-0 lead.
Sarah Garding got Becker on the board with her first goal of the year at 11:47 left in the first half to make it 2-1.
Four more Becker goals were to follow, making the score 5 - 2 at the half.
SLP didn’t quit as they came back the second half scoring early and often.
By the 17:38 mark, SLP had scored four unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead.
Becker and SLP traded goals two times, putting the score at 8-7 with 6:16 left to play.
Things looked bleak for Becker, but Ali Zimmer took the team on her back and slipped through Spring Lake Park’s defense to score the tying goal with :28 seconds left on the clock.
In sudden death overtime, several scoring chances occurred for both teams and Becker’s defense rose to the occasion and stopped SLP’s offense time and time again.
Goalie Kelsi Halverson made some incredible, game-saving stops to keep the clock running.
Becker, too had several shots on goal, but failed to put it past the SLP goalkeeper.
Finally, with about a minute left in OT, Macy Eigen was fed the ball and she weaved through traffic to score the winning goal for Becker.
“This being senior night, so it was a fun one to win,” said Hovde.
Scoring for Becker (3-8) were Zimmer with two goals, Eigen two, Kent two, Hurt two and one for Garding.
