The Bulldog football team — for the second week in a row — looked like a college team playing a high school team as they rolled to an easy win over Big Lake on the road Friday night.
The win improved Becker’s record to 3-1 while Big Lake dropped to 1-3.
It was telling right from the start as Becker received the kickoff and systematically worked their way down the field with runs and passes and eventually scored on a fourth down pass from Josh Fobbe to Nick Mittelstaedt from five yards out.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Hornet kick returner fumbled the runback, but fortunately for the home team, he was able to have a teammate fall on the slippery pigskin to preserve the possession.
A three and out meant the Bulldogs offense was getting the ball back after barely getting a chance to get a drink of water on the bench.
Hokan Bengtson’s defense continued to shine for the fourth game in a row, giving up just 145 yards and seven points and limiting the Hornet stars’ firepower.
And for the second week in a row, Fobbe and company dominated the line of scrimmage, dominated through the air and dominated on the ground, marching out to a 21-0 lead in just the first quarter.
By halftime, the Bulldogs held a 35-0 lead and were in firm control.
Mittelstaedt was the go-to guy for Fobbe when the team neared the goal line. He finished with three TDs and 27 yards on just four catches.
On the ground, the Bulldogs used Austin Berning, Isaac Koop and Morgan Boros, but it was junior Ethan Wilson who scored Becker’s second TD with a 36 yard dash down the left sideline to paydirt. Wilson finished with 41 yards on 4 carries and the one score.
Big Lake’s defense had its moments despite the lopsided score. Their size up front and on the edges was a challenge for Bulldog coaches and the pride of Big Lake’s defense kept their players hitting hard and rallying to the ball up until the final whistle.
Brandon Stern was tasked to handle the QB position for the raw Hornets, who are trying to build a new system after losing several star players to graduation and installing a new head coach, Bob Blanchard. Stern had a few moments where he shone, but the Bulldogs kept the pressure on the Hornet QB and his posse all night, never letting them gain much momentum throughout the contest.
Fobbe finished with five TD passes on 13 for 22 passing. The offense put up 383 yards and had 16 first downs compared to Big Lake’s 145 yards and eight first downs.
Kicker Emma Domka had her strong leg booming extra points all night. She only had one kick miss going through the uprights and she made XPs that could have split the goal posts from 30 yards out. She finished six-for-seven on the night.
Also scoring for Becker was Carter Hietala (two TDs) and Carter Callahan. The Hornet’s only score came from DeAndre Hill from one yard out late in the third quarter.
Egan Nelson and Ben Abfalter also had an interception apiece and Thomas Halvorson led all tacklers with four tackles and one assist. Caden DeWall had four tackles and five assists.
The Bulldogs next face Delano Friday night at Eppard Field for Homecoming. The Tigers are also 3-1 coming off a 27-7 win over Rocori.
