Bulldogs outshoot Hornets in girls basketball border battle

The Highway 10 border battle was renewed last Friday night, as the Becker Bulldogs hosted the Big Lake Hornets in a girls basketball contest. Thanks to a well balanced effort that saw 12 different Bulldogs log minutes, Becker cruised to the Mississippi 8 Conference win, 83-22.

The Bulldogs shot an incredible 44% from the 3 point line, hitting 11 of 25 shots, while holding the Hornets scoreless from beyond the arc, as Big Lake went 0-for-11.

Becker also forced the Hornets into 35 turnovers and converted those into 52 points, including 30 off the transition game.

Becker raced to a 58-16 lead at halftime and held the Hornets to just six second half points, as Bulldog head coach Dan Baird cleared his bench.

After the game, Baird sang the praises of his team, including players Alexis Rose and Adeline Kent.

“I’m really happy with the development of Lexi, as she sparked us after the team’s slow start,” Baird said. “And Adeline had a nice game, scoring 21 points despite being under the weather was pretty remarkable.”

For the game, Becker racked up 22 steals and also dished out 22 assists overall.

For the Hornets, Emily Steen led the way, as she scored 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four steals.

The win propelled the Bulldogs to a 4-2 record overall and 2-0 in the conference, as they retained the number one ranking in the state in Class AAA girls basketball. With the loss, the Hornets fell to 0-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
