Vs. Apollo

Carter Callahan scored three times and the Bulldogs held off the Eagles of St. Cloud Apollo last Friday night to improve to 7-0 and capture the North Central White District title.

Callahan dominated the ground game as he racked up 113 yards on 18 carries and Becker came out on top, 23-18.

In the first quarter, Becker and St. Cloud shared TD scores when Callahan scored on a five-yard run and Zach Bengtson came on and stayed consistent with a chip shot XP. The Eagles  responded when QB Andrew Karls found Will Allenspach from 20 yards out to make it 7-6. Apollo went for a two-point conversion to try and capture the lead, but failed.

Callahan again scored, this time in the second quarter as he rambled in from the six. Becker decided to go for two and the attempt was unsuccessful so the score was 13-6 for most of the rest of the half. However, Bengtson converted on a 24-yard field goal late in the first half to put Becker up 16-6 heading into the final 24 minutes.

Becker would build on their lead when Callahan again scored, this time from just a yard out and Becker found themselves up 23-6 at the start of the third.

The Eagles made the game interesting as they were able to score two times in the third — once on a Karls pass to Mach Ruot from nine yards out and a Karls scramble from five yards out. What killed Apollo was they were unsuccessful on both two-point attempts as Becker’s defense stiffened.

And that defense stayed stiff for the fourth quarter as no points were tallied and Becker walked away with their seventh win of the year.

QB Ryan Bengtson was six-for-12 through the air for 132 yards and one interception. His top target was Callahan, who reeled in two passes for 57 yards — averaging 28.5 yards a catch.

Karls was Becker’s biggest thorn as he was 12-for-30 passing for 129 yards and two TDs and was also the Eagle’s top rusher with 99 yards on 32 carries and one score.

Becker’s Ian Barau had five tackles on defense and one sack. Julius Nyakundi had seven tackles and one assist.
