The Becker Bulldog football team rode the legs of RBs Landen Kujawa and Cody Klatt and the tenacity of their defense to an easy win over Big Lake at home last Friday, 42-6, to capture the District championship.
The home game was played as a tribute to Tackle Cancer night throughout Minnesota.
Kujawa finished with 108 yards on 14 carries and three TD scores to help elevate the Bulldogs to a perfect, 7-0 record so far. Klatt had two scores on six rushes for 33 yards. Becker’s final game was Wednesday of this week against Chisago Lakes before the second season of football begins in playoff competition. See the results in next week’s edition of the Patriot.
Becker had no problem driving up and down the field against the Hornets as they quickly jumped out to a score in the first quarter and kept the pedal to the metal the rest of the way.
The first TD came when Cody Klatt crossed the goal line from nine yards out to put the home team up 7-0. Kujawa notched his first TD a short time later when he rambled into the end zone from six yards out to put the Bulldogs up 14-0. Before the first quarter was complete, Becker scored again as Klatt tallied his second TD — again from nine yards out to put the game at 21-0 after the first 12 minutes.
Quarterback Tristan Kowalkowski made it 28-0 when he nudged the ball over the end line from one yard out. Kujawa would score his second TD towards the end of the second quarter from 10 yards out and Becker was sitting pretty at 35-0 as halftime commenced.
The Hornets could not solve the Becker defense all night as Kujawa and Nathan Weiss combined for 19 tackles and held the visitors to just 80 yards total on the night. Becker’s d-line gave up just six rushing yards while the d-backs and linebackers contained the passing game with just 74 yards.
Kujawa notched his third TD in the third quarter when he plunged into the end zone from one yard out to finish Becker’s scoring at 42 points. The Hornets finally found paydirt late in the game when QB Carson Gellerman found WR Wilczek from 15 yards out to thwart the shutout. Their two-point conversion attempt failed and all that was left was for the clock to run out.
Becker finished with 344 total yards — 278 of it from the ground game. They had 20 first downs compared to just eight for Big Lake.
The Hornets had four turnovers with Sawyer Brown and Isaac Daluge intercepting Gellerman once each. Kaden Nicolas and Zachariah Halvorson each had one fumble recovery in the win.
Kicker Evan Norberg was perfect in his five extra point attempts.
Congratulations to the Skyway Green District Champions Becker Bulldogs.
