The Becker Bulldog tennis team ran into a pair of buzzsaws in the MSHSL Class AA State Tennis Tournament on Tuesday, falling to both Blake and Eden Prairie by scores of 0-7.
“In round one, we ran into a great Blake team,” Coach Hokan Bengtson said.
In Minnesota, there are just two classes of tennis, meaning that smaller type school such as Becker are put into the top class with the largest metropolitan schools in the state.
Zach Bengtson, Troy Nuest, Landon Peterson and Adler Herdina competed in the individual matches, while the doubles teams were Garett Lane/Sawyer Brown, Carter Ager/Brock Herdina, and Nathan Weiss/Jon Drury.
In the second round, Becker fared better in the game scores, but still fell to Eden Prairie, one of the largest schools in all of Minnesota.
“In round two, we played well but came up short,” Bengtson said.
The Bulldogs used the same lineup and showed a spirit of competitiveness, but were unable to break the win column.
The loss ended the team portion of the state tournament, but Bengtson reflected on another great season from his team.
“We finished a great season as Section 8AA champs and Mississippi 8 Conference champions,” Bengtson said. “We finished the year 19-8 overall.”
Senior Zach Bengtson’s season was not done with Tuesday’s team losses, as he was scheduled to compete Thursday in the MSHSL State Individual Tennis Championships.
Check back next week for an update on Zach’s final high school tennis experience.
