Bulldog swimmers trounce Tigers

The Becker swimming and diving team put together a dominating performance last Thursday in defeating the Princeton Tigers, 98-82.  The win left the girls with a season record of 6-4.

The Tigers started strong in the meet, winning the 200 medley relay, but the Bulldogs were on a torrid pace after that taking the 1-2-3 spots in three of the next four events.  This dominance gave the Bulldogs a commanding lead at the halfway point of the meet.

Meghan Swanson, Morgan Schrader and Nev Baune finished 1-2-3 in the 200 free, followed by Laila Cook, Lucy Pink and Joey Cox in the 200 individual medley.  Becker also had the top three finishers in the diving portion of the meet, as Sarah Woelfel, Lauren Woelfel and Bella Kuschel were all impressive.

Swanson picked up the win in the 500 free, while Avary Maunu, Tia Schaap, Cook and Swanson teamed up to win the 200 relay.

Also picking up the win in the 100 backstroke was Arleigh Pudlick.

“The girls had some really good swims and are now heading into the Section meet training part of the season,” said coach Tina Tamm.  “They are going to have some pretty tough workouts this week.”

After that, it will be “taper” week, which Tamm joked might be the team’s favorite week of the entire season.

The entire team is ready to perform their best at the Section tournament, as that will be the culminating event in this covid-shortened season.

“In the most unusual season of all, they at least get to finish in somewhat normal fashion,” said Tamm.

This year’s section qualifiers include: Kyla Henkemeyer, Annika Howe, Sarah Schmidt, Morgan Schrader, Monica Zimmerman, Nev Baune, Kadence Cox, Sarah Woelfel, Avary Maunu

Arleigh Pudlick, Tia Schaap, Sophie Studer, Meghan Swanson, Delaney Varney, Lucy Pink, Lauren Woelfel, Grace Wynia, Joey Cox, Grace Gifford, Bella Kuschel, Laila Cook and Karli Kirk.

The Sectional diving competition was scheduled for October 22, followed by the swimming portion of the meet on October 24.  See complete details in next week’s Patriot.
