Bulldog swimmers sizzle the Tigers

The Becker Bulldog swimming and diving team continues to impress in their dual meets, as last Thursday they handily defeated the Princeton Tigers by a score of 99-80.

The win improves Head Coach Tina Tamm’s squad to 5-1 on the season, while 20 girls have now qualified for the Section meet.

“We are just about half way through the season and the girls are swimming very well,” Tamm said. “Many have competed against these teams before and they know what to expect when we get to the meet – they know what they need to do to beat whomever they are competing against.”

Becker piled up a bunch of first place finishes in the meet, including a domination of the 200 meter events. The 200 Medley Relay of Laila Cook, Grace Wynia, Delaney Varney, and Avary Maunu easily outdistanced the Tigers for the win, while Varney won the 200 Freestyle and Wynia was victorious in the 200 Individual medley.

It was another Bulldog win in the 200 freestyle relay, as Maunu, Sarah Woelfel, Sophie Studer and Tia Schaap teamed up for the win.

Schapp continued her strong sprinting with a win in the 50 Freestyle, while Cook was the winner in the 100 backstroke.

In the diving competition, Sarah Woelfel took the title to help continue the Bulldog dominance in this event.

Milaca

On Saturday, the Bulldogs traveled to Milaca for an invitational tournament and came away with some impressive times.

“For many of the girls, this was their first ‘big’ meet,” Tamm said. “With COVID last year we couldn’t have any multi-team meets so they didn’t have this experience.”

The Bulldogs focused on several dropped times on the day, as Tamm was happy her athletes were able to get in the experience of what a large meet looks and feels like.

“It’s tough when you don’t know what to expect going into a meet, and you don’t quite know how to prepare for it,” Tamm said of her squad. “You can practice every day, but the set up is different, the competition is different, the atmosphere is different.”

The Bulldogs did improve times in six events on the day, with Nev Baune, Briana Dahle, Sophie Studer, Taya Borkoski and Grace Wynia decreasing their times at the meet.

Next up for the Bulldogs was a road trip to Holdingford on Thursday, and Tamm expected it to be another interesting event.

“Holdingford has a five lane pool so we can only enter two girls in each event,” said the coach. “This makes putting the line up together a bit more tricky as you have to get first place finishes in order to win the meet. We need to work on our race finishes so we don’t get touched out at the end.”
