Bulldog swimmers place 6th in True Team Sections

The Becker Bulldogs hosted last weekend’s Section 5A True Team Meet and came away with a sixth place finish. The meet format is unique in that it awards points for every place finisher, leading to much higher than usual team scores. For example, Becker finished with 1,004 team points, compared to fifth place Sauk Rapids’ 1,241 points and seventh place Big Lake’s 659 points. Monticello claimed the Section True Team title and will be competing in the state true team meet next weekend.

“It was great to have all the teams back in the pool and cheering,” said Coach Tina Tamm. “After last years ‘quiet’ meets, the noise was well appreciated.”

The Bulldogs posted some excellent time drops throughout the meet and made it to the podium, meaning a top eight finish, a total of six times.

Sarah and Lauren Woelfel picked up the top finishes for the Bulldogs, placing second and third, respectively, in the diving competition.

Delaney Varney finished in third place in the 100 Butterfly competition, while Laila Cook finished sixth in the 200 Individual Medley.

Becker’s other top individual finish came from Grace Wynia, who took seventh place in the 100 Breaststroke.

In the relay events, Becker picked up a seventh place finish in the 400 Freestyle with Tia Schapp, Meghan Swanson, Varney and Cook putting together a nice performance, while the team of Cook, Wynia, Varney and Avary Maunu finished in eigth place in the 200 Medley.

The True Team event marked the beginning of a string of post season events for the Bulldogs, as the team will now prepare for the Section Tournament, which will be held Nov. 11-13 in Becker.

“We now head into the training phase for Sections and it’s going to take a lot of hard work for the next three weeks to get ready for the final competition, but the girls are ready,” Tamm said. “They know what’s ahead of them next week but they also know why they need to put in the work.”

Hornet divers do well at Becker

The Big Lake divers had an impressive showing in Becker Oct. 22 at the section dive competition.

Sophomore Britney Krumrei took first place with a total score of 381.15. Junior Hannah Strom took fourth overall and Senior Maddie Svien took fifth overall.

The swimmers will compete in the swim portion of the section competition Sat., Oct 23 at Monticello.
