Bulldog swimmers and divers post team best finish at True Team

The Becker Bulldog swimming and diving team put forth the best effort in program history with a fifth place finish at the Section True Team meet last weekend.

“It’s the highest True Team meet score we’ve ever had,” Coach Tina Tamm said. “We also had a medal winner in 10 of the 12 events.”

In the diving event, Lauren Woelfel piked and tucked her way to the championship by over 30 points, as she put forth and incredible series of dives.

As usual, the relay events were a strength for the Bulldogs, as three teams found their way to the podium.

It started with the 200 medley relay, who brought home a seventh place finish (Laila Cook, Grace Wynia, Delaney Varney and Avary Maunu). The 400 free relay also took seventh place for the Bulldogs (Varney, Cook, Tia Schaap and Grace Mork).

The highest placing relay was the 200 freestyle, as they earned a fifth place finish behind strong performances from Meghan Swanson, Grace Wynia, Schaap and Mork.

“The girls swam some really good races,” Tamm said. “Many dropped time to get their personal best for the season and are looking to drop more time at the Section meet.”

Several other Bulldogs found themselves on the podium, earning medals for their efforts at the meet.

In addition to her relay performances, Mork was also excellent in the distance races, finishing fifth in the 200 free race and fourth in the 500 free.

Schaap’s sprinting also put her in a top position in both the 50 and 100 free, as she placed in seventh place in both events.

The Bulldogs also earned a pair of sixth place finishes, with Varney in the 100 butterfly and Wynia in the 100 breaststroke.

Tamm was proud of her athletes and also reflected that the performance bodes well for the Section meet coming up in just a couple of weeks.

“This meet gives us a tiny glimpse into what the Section meet will look like,” Tamm said. “The girls now know potentially who their competition will be when the Section meet happens in November.”

In the next several weeks, Tamm has both the Varsity and JV teams ready for action.

“Our JV swimmer/divers are now preparing for their JV championship meet that will be held in Becker on Friday, Oct 28 and our Varsity girls are headed into the final stretch of their season,” Tamm said. “They are going to have some tough practices in the next couple weeks but it’s needed to get the results they are striving for.”
