Bulldog girls tennis tops Hornets, Tigers

Coach Nate Bucher and his Bulldog girls tennis team opened the season in dominant fashion, topping a pair of opponents 7-0 to pick up wins in its first two competitions.

Home Opener

Last Thursday, Becker hosted the Big Lake Hornets in the season opener and came away victorious in all seven matches.

Number one singles player Courtney Nuest defeated Ari Laun 6-0 and 6-0 to pace the Bulldogs and give them the early advantage.

“Courtney has been commanding and efficient so far this season,” said Bucher, as he assessed her first two performances.  “She has been controlling each point and making the shots needed to keep her opponent off balance.”

Also scoring victories for the Bulldogs in the singles matches were Maddie Moe (6-1, 6-2 over Ella Dotzler), Ayla Brown (6-0, 6-1 over Sophie Jones), and Dani Nuest (6-0, 6-2 over Amelia Gardner).

In doubles play, the Bulldogs showed early cohesion in picking up some hard fought sets to put the team over the top.

Scoring wins were Alayna Lindquist and Julia Bengtson (6-1, 6-1 over Sophie Wesolowski and Lilly Stolte), Jackie Yoerg and Jazlyn Toedter (6-4, 6-0 over Janelle Gerdts and Emmy Bowne), and Janelle Gudim and Hannah Uecker (6-3, 6-2 over Brynn Mossak and Kayla Niedzielski).

“Our number three doubles team of Janelle and Hannah performed really well,” added Bucher.  “They have continued to work hard to improve their game during every match.”

Top the Tigers

Tuesday night, the girls traveled to Princeton and again showed great poise en route to a commanding win.

Bucher credited Dani Nuest for her “consistent and athletic” performance in her number four singles match.

The coach added that he was pleased with the entire team’s effort and went on to single out his number two doubles team for their stellar performance.

“Jazlyn and Jackie did a great job of crashing the net and putting the balls away with some fine shots,” said Bucher.  “They both really played the way we know they can play.”

Thursday, the team was scheduled to host St. Francis while on Tuesday they will host perennial power Foley.  Start times for both competitions is 4 p.m.  Look for results in next week’s Patriot.
