The Becker boys tennis team continues to impress, playing excellent tennis against stellar competition.
Last week, the Bulldogs knocked off the Buffalo Bison, 6-1.
“It was an amazing finish by our guys in Buffalo,” Coach Hokan Bengtson said. “We had six of the seven matches go to third sets, and we won five of six of them.”
Zach Bengtson cruised to victory at #1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-3, while Troy Nuest won the #2 singles match 6-0. 4-6, 6-3.
Adler Herdina was next, winning in comeback style 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, followed by Brock Herdina’s 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.
In doubles play, Landon Peterson/Sawyer Brown were 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 winners and Garett Lane teamed up with Jon Drury to win a thriller, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (11), 6-4.
“We showed our mental toughness and grit in those matches and competed well to the end,” Coach Bengtson said. “This was a big match because Buffalo is now in section 8AA, and we needed a test after three days of practice in a row.”
Last Saturday, the Bulldogs faced some amazing competition but still showed strong at Elk River despite dropping two of three matches.
“Elk River is the favorite to win their section, and Wayzata is one of the top teams in the state,” Bengtson said. “Excellent tennis and competition for our team today.”
In the opener, Becker blanked Harding High, 7-0. It was the same slate of winners for Becker, while Carter Ager teamed up with John Boecker to win #3 doubles and complete the clean sweep.
Becker fell to the Elks in the next match with Brock Herdina picking up the lone win for the Bulldogs at #4 singles, 6-2, 1-6 (4).
In the final match of the day, the Bulldogs nearly pulled off the huge upset, falling 3-4 to the Wayzata Trojans.
Bengtson and Nuest were winners in the top two singles matches, while Peterson/Brown scored a 6-4, 6-0 win in the top doubles match.
Monday, the Bulldogs fell against another state ranked opponent, Mound-Westonka.
“It was a really tough battle today at Mound, as eight of their 10 players on varsity were seniors and their maturity and ability to finish points was the difference tonight,” Bengtson said. “They are ranked #6 in Class A and tonight showed why they have earned that.”
Becker fell 3-4, marking another super close match against a top opponent.
Bengtson and Nuest again cruised to victory, while Peterson/Brown picked up the doubles win.
