Brown, Borst Advance To Section Final In Tennis

“Yesterday was a historic day,” said Head Tennis Coach Hokan Bengtson. “We had both of our singles players in the championship match for individual singles.”  
Josiah Borst beat the #1 player from Monticello in round two of the Section 8AA tournament and then was defeated by his own teammate, Dawson Brown, in the championship match.  Both Brown and Borst will move on to the section finals next Thursday in St. Cloud as the #1 and #2 seed from the south side of the section.  
“I was really impressed with how both of them handled this difficult match,” said Bengtson.  
Brown is 20-1 on the year and Borst is 18-5.
In doubles, the Bulldogs played well, but the field was really difficult.  
Austin Hill teamed up with Jackson Lefebvre and they were  beat a good Monticello team in round one. They then lost to the team that took second place from Sartell. 
 The other doubles team of C.J. Howard/Tyler Lindquist beat Big Lake’s duo of Charlie and Tony Phillips but lost to the #1 seeded Buffalo team of Andrew Christenson and Jake Jungwirth - who subsequently won the championship.
 
Results:
Brown beat Jett Weiland of Big Lake, 6-0, 6-1 in the first round, then beat Nathan Maus of Big Lake (6-0, 6-0) in the second round before beating Borst  (6-1, 6-2) in the third.
 
Borst beat Austin Sura of Sartell in the first round (6-0, 6-1), beat Dylan Fyle of Monticello in the second (6-3, 6-0) before losing to Brown in the championship.
 
Hill and Lefebvre beat the Phillips brothers of Big Lake (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) in their first round match before losing to Brandon Schuchard and Trevor Erickson of Sartell by a 6-0, 6-3 score.
 
Howard and Lindquist lost their first round match to Logan Bican and Trevor Bautch of Monticello, 6-0, 6-2 before losing to Christenson and Jungwirth of Buffalo in the championship match, 6-2, 7-5.

The Bulldogs beat a much-improved Buffalo team 5-2 Monday night at Fitness Evolution in St. Cloud.  
 
Becker rallied and played well to beat Buffalo with Gudim and Schneider playing a great second set at #3 Doubles to beat two quality opponents.  Josiah Borst continued to show his mental toughness by defeating a really good #2 singles player.

#1 doubles: Hill and Roemer (Beck) over Sean Harnois and Jon Immel (Buff), 6-2, 6-2; #2 doubles: Howard and Lindquist (Beck) over Victor Zwack and Eric Olson (Buff), 6-1, 6-3; #3 doubles: Gudim and Schneider (Beck) over Cade Stensby and Nick Immel (Buff), 6-2, 6-4.
 
Becker moves on to the team semi-finals next Tuesday to play the winner of Brainerd versus Bemidji. Borst and Brown will play individually on Thursday in St. Cloud.
