Boys Go 1 1 In Princeton Tournament

The Becker Bulldog boys basketball team split two games last weekend in the Princeton High School tournament Friday and Saturday.

Eagles 95, Bulldogs 74

In Becker’s first game of the weekend, the Bulldogs faced off against the mighty Totino Grace Eagles of the North Suburban Conference and lost by 21.

Four Bulldog athletes scored in double digits Friday evening including Michael Veldman (13), Josh Nohner (11), Dawson Brown (11) and Tyler Kruse (10), but the Bulldogs had a hard time containing Totino’s Reggie Meyer, who had 24 points.

Also scoring in double digits for the Eagles were Seth Sullwold (15), Collin Fleming (12), T.J. McDonald (12) and James Streeter (10).

Becker hung in there for most of the first half, going into the halftime break down by only seven at 47-40, but the second half was a different story. Meyer shot 61% from the field including three-of-five from three point land. He also finished with five assists and 11 rebounds.

Veldman was five-of-11 from the floor and had three rebounds. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Eagles 30-23, but were just five-of-11 from beyond the three point line while Totino was 11-of-27.

Bulldog Scoring: Veldman 13, Nohner 11, Brown 11, Kruse 10, Cole Anderson 8, Andrew Davalos 7, Erik Tungland 6, Blake Barthel 4, Zach Moeller 2 and Andrew Stanger 2.

Bulldogs 71, Huskies 59

In Becker’s second game of the weekend tournament, Michael Veldman “lit ‘em up”, scoring 29 points in Becker’s big win over St. Anthony Village, 71-59.
Veldman and St. Anthony’s Ben Peterson (27 points) put on quite a show, scoring 56 of the team’s 130 points scored. Also contributing for the Bulldogs with double digit scoring were Nohner (14) and Tungland (12).

Becker and Veldman came out of the gate in a firestorm, scoring at will and shutting down Peterson and  company with a pestering defense. By halftime, Becker found themselves up by 14 at 33-19 and in the driver’s seat.
