BL Legion splits 2 doubleheaders

The Big Lake American Legion Baseball team won two games and lost two over the past week.

Game 1

Last Tuesday, they split a doubleheader at Mora. The first game was a low-scoring contest, with Mora coming away with a 3-1 win.

Dreeson Millam started on the mound for Big Lake and pitched well. But in the third, Mora scored all three of its runs on two walks, a double and a passed ball.

The Hornets didn’t fare well at the plate. They had their only hit in the final inning, a single by Connor Lundquist after a walk to Millam. After a passed ball, Millam scored on an infield error for Big Lake’s lone run. The game ended when the next batter grounded into a double play.

Millam took the loss. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits. He walked four and struck out five. William Bilben pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth inning without allowing a hit.

Game 2

The Hornets put together more offense in the second game in a 5-4 win. They jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Lundquist had a leadoff double and scored on an error.

Mora tied the score with a run off Skoglund on a walk, stolen base and a balk.

Big Lake came back with two in the home second. Caiden Duchene doubled and scored on a groundout. With two outs, Sully Laqua singled and came around to score on a double error for a 3-1 lead.

Mora got a run back in the third on a leadoff walk, a groundout and a single.

But the Hornets responded with two more runs in the home third. Skoglund singled and went to second when Blayne Varner reached on an error. On consecutive wild pitches, Skoglund scored and Varner went to third. He scored on a bunt by Duchene for a 5-2 lead.    

Mora got close with two runs in the fifth on three singles and an error. But after a runner was caught stealing, Kaeden Tidrick struck out the final batter to end the game.

Skoglund got the win. He allowed two earned runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out three.

At the plate, Laqua had two hits and scored a run. Skoglund and Duchene each drove in a run.

Game 1

In the first game of a doubleheader last Thursday, Jeremiah Wanhala pitched a complete game and didn’t allow a hit in a 3-1 win over Chisago Lakes.

The Hornets took the lead in the third. After two outs, five consecutive singles by Austin Schleif, Skoglund, Wanhala, Bennett Thieke and Millam, along with an error and wild pitch, led to all three Big Lake runs.

Chisago Lakes got their run in the final inning after a walk, wild pitch and an error.

Wanhala pitched all five innings, allowing an unearned run on no hits. He walked six and struck out four.

At the plate, Millam had two hits, a walk and an RBI. Wanhala singled and drove in a run. Schleif and Skoglund each singled and scored a run.

Game 2

The Hornets didn’t show much at the plate or on the field in the second game, losing 6-1.

The only hit for Big Lake was   a leadoff single in the first by Lundquist. He stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Thieke.

Chisago Lakes had a run in the first, two in the second and three in the third off three different Big Lake pitchers. Five of the six runs for Chisago Lakes were unearned.

Big Lake was scheduled to play doubleheaders against STMA and Becker this past week, results next week.
