BL Legion Drops 3 to Finish Regular Season

The Big Lake American Legion baseball team ended its regular season on a down note, losing its final three games last week.

Vs. STMA

Last Tuesday the Hornets fell to STMA, 14-3.

Jeffery Wanhala started on the mound for Big Lake and got through the first two innings without allowing a run. But STMA broke through in the third with two runs on a single, a walk, two stolen bases and an error.

The Hornets came back to take the lead in the home third. After Blayne Varner was hit by a pitch, William Bilben doubled him home for the first run. He went to third when Austin Schleif reached on an error. After Schleif stole second, Jason Skoglund singled both runners home for a 3-2 lead.

But STMA tied the score in the fourth on a walk, an error and a passed ball. Then they pulled away with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth.

The Hornets had very few scoring chances over the last four innings. Varner reached on a walk in the fourth. Kaeden Tidrick singled in the fifth and Dreeson Millam reached on an error in the sixth.

Wanhala suffered the loss. Four Big Lake pitchers gave up just five hits total. But they walked nine and the Hornets committed three errors.

Vs. Becker

Last Thursday, the Big Lake bats were mostly silent when they lost a doubleheader to Becker without scoring a run.

Millam started on the mound and pitched well in the first game, but lost 3-0.

Becker scored a run in the second on a hit batter, a stolen base, sac fly and a groundout.

Big Lake threatened to score in the home second when Varner and Tidrick each singled. But Varner was caught stealing to end the threat.

There was no more scoring until the fifth when Becker pushed across two runs on a hit batter, two stolen bases and two singles.

Three Big Lake batters had hits over the final four innings. But no one got past second base.

Millam took the loss. He allowed three runs on just two hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out one.

Second Game

The second game wasn’t as close, as Becker exploded for seven runs in the first inning and went on to a 14-0 win.

The Hornets had no answer for Becker pitcher Kellan Graning, who didn’t allow a hit and struck out 10. Big Lake’s only baserunner was Varner, who walked in the second inning.

Conway Gust started on the mound and took the loss for Big Lake.

The Hornets played Annandale in a first-round Sub-State 10 Tournament elimination game  Tuesday. The winner was scheduled to take on Wayzata Wednesday, results next week.
