The Big Lake Hornet girls soccer team beat Delano and gained a tie against North Branch in two matches this past week.
Hornets 1, Vikings 1
Big Lake’s goal was scored from a volley off a corner kick with 24 minutes left of the second half.
Unfortunately, with about five minutes left in the game, the Vikings had a free kick outside the box. Big Lake’s goalkeeper made a diving save and pushed the ball outside for a corner kick.
As the Hornet goalkeeper was jumping up to make the catch on the corner kick, an on rushing Viking came in with her head, made contact with the keeper in the air, and knocked the ball out of the keeper’s grasp and into the net.
The goal was verbally reviewed by the center referee and assistant referee as to whether the goal stands due to the contact with the goalkeeper. The referee counted it as a goal for the Vikings and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
This was the second tie for the Hornets and at the time their record improved to 4-1-2.
Big Lake 2, Delano 0
After a scoreless first half, the Hornets scored two goals in the second half to pull out a 2-0 victory over the Tigers Monday night.
The Hornets are 5-1-2 and their next game was at St Francis Thursday (full report on match in next week’s Patriot).
