BL girls soccer improve to 4-1-1

The Big Lake Hornet girls soccer team improved to 4-1-1 with two wins and a tie this past week.

Hornets 3, Bulldogs 2

The Big Lake varsity girls soccer team landed their first win of the season Aug. 27 with a nail-biting win over Becker at Hornet Stadium.

Big Lake scored the first goal in the first half, then Becker came back and tied it up in the second half.

The Hornets took the lead with eight minutes left of the game, but Becker answered back with a goal from a header off a set piece.

With the game tied and three minutes left and no OT permitted, Big Lake took one last chance with a set piece over the top of Becker’s defense, sliding the last and winning goal past Becker’s goal keeper.

Hornets 0, Tigers 0

Princeton and Big Lake’s second matchup of the varsity girls soccer season resulted in a scoreless tie at Hornet Stadium Sept. 10.

Big Lake’s offense out shot Princeton’s offense but Princeton’s defense and goal keeper managed to shutdown all of Big Lake’s scoring opportunities.

Big Lake 3, Becker 0

The Hornets ended their scoring drought with a 3-0 victory against their rival, Becker Tuesday night.

The first goal of the night came from a Big Lake corner kick that was headed into the back of the net by a forward.

The second Hornet goal before halftime came from a midfielder’s cross to a striker running onto the ball for a one touch finish into the back of the net.

The third goal was 15 minutes into the second half when a forward scored from the right side of the goal with her left foot from a pass from a center midfielder.

The Bulldogs had a couple last minute scoring opportunities at the end of the game. One was a one-versus-one block by Big Lake’s freshman goalkeeper and the second was a free kick that was blocked by Big Lake’s defensive wall outside the box.

The Hornets are 4-1-1 heading into Friday night’s game versus North Branch.
