Big Lake volleyball beats Totino

The Hornet volleyball team got their Labor Day weekend off to a great start with a 3-1 victory last Friday over the Totino-Grace Eagles.

After taking the opening set by the slimmest of margins, 25-23, Big Lake dropped the second before rallying to take the last two and the match.

Marissa Reed had a solid performance, with 15 kills, eight digs, and two blocks, but it was the younger Reed, Madison, that led the way against T-G. She finished with 19 digs, 14 kills, a block, an assist, and one ace serve. Ashley Fitzgibbons led the team with 28 assists and added seven digs. Kam Tschritter contributed 18 set assists and six digs. Izzy Moudry was stellar with her serve, finishing with four aces to go along with eight kills and three digs.

Vs. Becker

Tuesday’s opponent was Hwy.-10 rival, Becker. The spectators were treated to a thrilling, back and forth affair, but the Bulldogs prevailed in five sets.

The Hornets took the opening set 25-19, which would be the largest winning margin for either side the rest of the night. Becker took the next two with identical 25-22 scores. Big Lake rallied to force a tiebreaking set with a 25-23 victory in the fourth. But this time it would be the Bulldogs who would rally and take the final set 15-12.

Vs. Mound Westonka

Last Monday the Hornets fell 3-1 against the WhiteHawks from Mound Westonka. Big Lake fell behind 2-0 before taking the third set 25-22. But that is all the team was able to manage as Mound took the fourth to seal the victory.

Ashley Fitzgibbons, again, led the team in set assists, 15, and digs, 12. Marissa Reed did a little bit of everything as she had nine kills, nine digs, and three blocks. Tschritter finished with nine assists and eight digs, and Jaz Dimkpa added five kills and two blocks.
