Big Lake softball loses 2

The Hornets dropped a pair of conference games last week, falling to Princeton and Chisago Lakes.

Last Thursday the team welcomed Princeton to town for another Mississippi 8 Conference matchup. The visiting Tigers went home with a 7-3 victory over the Hornets.

The game stayed scoreless until the fourth inning, as starting pitcher Tessa Fjone kept the Tigers off the scoreboard and then Kamrynn Tschritter’s single gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead. But five Princeton runs in the top of the fifth blew the game wide open and the team was never able to retake the lead. Grace Knodle drove in the other two runs for the Hornets. Fjone pitched all seven innings, striking out seven and allowing zero earned runs.

On Friday Big Lake suffered a 14-3 (six innings) road defeat at Chisago Lakes.

The Wildcats jumped on Hornet pitching right from the start as they scored two runs in each of the first two innings for an early 4-0 lead. Big Lake answered with three of their own in the top of the fourth thanks to a three-run homer off the bat of Tschritter. That would be all the Hornets could muster as the Wildcats pulled away after that. Ava Prosser was the only Big Lake player with multiple hits, finishing two-for-three. Sydnie Loftus took the loss on the mound.

Next up for the Hornets is a road game at Monticello on Thursday and a tournament at Forest Lake on Saturday. The team was supposed to play Tuesday, April 16 as well but, due to rain, that game has been postponed until 4/30.
