Becker wrestlers continue to impress

The Becker Bulldog wrestling team continues to put together some complete performances, and as a result remain undefeated against Conference and Section opponents.

The latest Mississippi 8 Conference foe to fall was the Monticello Magic, as last Thursday the Bulldogs completely dominated the match, winning 65-7.

Bennett Kujawa started things off with a second period fall at 106 pounds and Nolan Jurek followed suit with a pin of his own to stretch the Bulldog lead to 12-0.

Kaden Nicolas then scored a decision at 120 and Landen Kujawa notched a forfeit for a 21-0 lead before Becker lost its first match at 132.

Becker then again ran off four wins in a row – Jake Rosenow (decision 138), Ethan Anderson (fall 145), Mason Doucette (tech. fall 152), Adam Jurek (fall 160) – to claim a 41-4 lead.

Becker again put together a four match streak to end the match, with three falls and a forfeit.

Picking up pins for Becker were Tyson Ricker (182, Dylan Weber (195) and Dylan Kolby (220).  Bryce Kuschel took a forfeit in the 285 match to finalize the scoring for the Bulldogs.

Last Friday, the Bulldogs trailed to the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa tournament and came away with a first place finish among the six teams in attendance.

A total of six Bulldogs claimed individual championships in their respective weight classes, and overall Becker amassed 236.5 team points, just edging the host Jaguars who had 232.

Bennett Kujawa claimed the title at 106 pounds with a major decision, while Nolan Jurek also scored a major to win the 113 pound bracket.

At 120 pounds, Kaden Nicolas scored two falls and a major decision to place first, while teammate Ethan Anderson won the title at 145 pounds.  Tyson Ricker (182) and Bryce Kuschel (285) also won their weight class championship.

Other place finishes for Becker included Landen Kujawa (second at 126), Nolan Muellner (fourth at 126), Drew May (second at 132), Ryan Boecker (third at 132), Jake Rosenow (fourth at 138), Owen Angell (third at 145), Mason Doucette (second at 152), Adam Jurek (third at 160), Ryan Nelson (second at 170), and Joe Goth (second at 195).

Royals

The team participated in a huge holiday tournament December 29-30 at Rogers High School and came away with an impressive second place finish out of a large field of 30 teams.

The STMA Knights finished as the top team with 241 total points, while Becker posted 187 and finished ahead of some wrestling powerhouses such as Anoka, Apple Valley and Scott West.

Kaden Nicolas finished in third place in the 120 pound bracket, claiming his last victory with a first period fall over Alex Lehman of Grand Rapids. The win pushed Nicolas’ record on the year to 12-3 overall.

Teammate Landen Kujawa also placed third (126 bracket), claiming his spot with an 11-3 Major Decision win over Minneota’s Peyton Gillund.

Senior Ethan Anderson scored a 12-4 Major Decision at 145 pounds to claim seventh place in the tournament, while Owen Angell also picked up a seventh place finish with a Major Decision of his own (152 pounds).

At 160 pounds, Mason Doucette placed third in his bracket with a 9-7 Decision over Leo Siekmann of Scott West.

Adam Jurek was the sixth place finisher at 170 pounds, while Tyson Ricker finished third in the 182 pound bracket.

Dylan Weber scored a 12-3 Major Decision over Dylan Thomas of Scott West to claim third place at 195 pounds.

Becker continued to show its mettle in the upper weights at 220 pounds, as Dylan Kolby finished in second place.

Bryce Kuschel also made it to the championship match before falling in a close decision to finish in second place for Becker.

Next up for the Bulldogs was a triangular match scheduled for Friday night, as the Bulldogs were set to host Chisago Lakes and Sauk Rapids-Rice.
