Becker Jr. Legion wins state title

The Becker Junior Legion baseball team captured the large class state title last weekend in incredible fashion.

After finishing the regular season 17-7 and carrying a four game winning streak into the playoffs, the Bulldogs set out to earn the title.

Becker won its first two games in walk-off fashion, 4-3 over Bayport and 12-11 over Farmington.  In the second win, the Bulldogs were down by one run and had two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning with no runners on base before four straight hits sealed the win.

Next, Becker lost to Fergus Falls, 2-7, in a game that dropped the locals to the loser’s bracket.  Once there, Becker downed a very good New Ulm team, 8-3, to make it back to the championship finals, where they would need to defeat Fergus Falls twice to win the title.

In the opener, Becker won 4-1 to force the final contest and in that game, the Bulldogs went crazy at the plate, notching 14 runs to pick up the 14-8 victory.

Riley Girard was recognized as the top player in the tournament, as he caught every inning of every game.
