Becker Club Hosts Horseshoe Tourney

The “Clank and Thud” indoor horseshoe club hosted a tournament last Saturday at the Becker American legion building on Hancock Street, with a group of 24 throwers competing in three classes at the day-long event.

In the A Class final Saturday afternoon, well-known competitor Jim Aleckson won all seven of his matches with no defeats.  He was followed by Sig Armitage, Mark Smith, Dale Hustad, Dick Dvorak, Ben LaCoursiere, Joshua Olson and Bob Knudtson in the finishing order.

In B Class, Delbert Karsjens won five matches and lost one to take top spot, followed by Leslie Marquardt, Gary Boots, Brian Wipper, Stanley Barney, Joe Raycraft, Dave Mcgovern and Mike DeMars.

The C Class results saw Janet Rudd in first with seven wins against no losses, followed by John Hustings, Ron Ruch, Jerry Zastrow, Dave Anderson, Bud Schaefer, Wanda Swenson and Bruce Swenson.

The club formed last December, with the garage area of the former fire hall in the Legion building providing the perfect space for an indoor horseshoe pitch.  The “clank” of the shoe striking the embedded steel pin and the “thud” of the impact of a near miss in the sticky clay soil in each box gave rise to the club name, according to organizer Russ Girtz.
