Over 1,000 youth wrestlers from across the upper Midwest will be competing this weekend at Monticello High School as part of the Gopher State Nationals Wrestling Tournament.

 

The tournament is the 10th annual and the third and final leg of the 2014-15 Midwest Wrestling Tour. The other two tournaments are the Badgerland Nationals, held in La Crosse, WI last weekend and the Hawkeye Nationals, held December 6-7 in Waterloo, IA.

 

Wrestlers placing 1st-6th are awarded custom, event-specific medals at each of the events. Wrestlers that place 1st-6th in all three events are awarded the coveted MWT Belt, 176 wrestlers remain in contention after two events. In the 2014-15 season, over 2,400 wrestlers will compete in the three events.

 

Becker will have several youths wrestling in Monticello this weekend.

 

The Gopher State Nationals draw wrestlers from 10-12 different states in the union. The  wrestlers are seeded by an expert panel, ensuring competitive matches throughout the tournament. They use electronic score clocks and online results are updated regularly throughout the weekend.
