Four Big Lake wrestlers are competing in the state tournament this weekend after placing in the top two spots at the 6AA Section meet last Friday and Saturday.
Cash Stortz, Zach Smith and Carson Gellerman each won the section title in their weight class and Charles Mikely finished second to qualify for the state tournament.
Stortz (43-2) won the section title at 127 pounds. After a bye, he opened by pinning Alex Ogle of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 4:34. He followed with a pin of Beau Dipprey of Zimmerman at 4:42. He won by medical default over Levi Thompson of Princeton in the championship match.
Smith (22-11) won top honors at 152 pounds. After a bye, he pinned Zander Biker of ROCORI at 1:46. He won a hard-fought 4-3 decision over Owen Carlson of Albany, then beat Drew May of Becker, 11-3 in the championship match.
Gellerman (32-6) won the 189-pound weight class. After a bye, he pinned Conner Klinkhammer of Zimmerman at 2:28. He followed with a pin of Carter Coutright of Annandale-Maple Lake at 4:47. In the final. he beat Mason Orth of ROCORI by major decision, 12-3.
Mikely (34-15) took second at 172 pounds. He beat Nathaniel Belair of Zimmerman, 14-3 in his first match. He followed by beating Tyler Graczyk of Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted, 8-6, then beat Nathan Solder of ROCORI, 12-6. He lost by pin to Owen Angell of Becker at 2:42, then came back to beat Connor Plumski of Albany in the second-place wrestleback, 8-5.
The first round of the State Individual Tournament begins Friday at 9 a.m. at the Xcel Energy Center.
Hornets fall in Sections
The Big Lake wrestling team was eliminated from the Section 6AA team tournament in the second round last Thursday at Foley.
The Hornets got past Sauk Rapids-Rice in the opening round, 58-12, but lost in the quarterfinals to ROCORI, 38-25.
