The Wright County Outstanding Senior Volunteer Selection Committee in cooperation with the MN State Fair Board and the Wright County Fair Board recently named Lillian Sukut and Terry Marsh their Outstanding Senior Citizens for 2017.
To be eligible, a person must be a Minnesota resident and must be at least 70 years old by Aug. 1. The committee looks for leadership, diversity of accomplishments and the variety of services performed; only volunteer activities for which there is no compensation are considered.
Sukut, who is from Maple Lake, credits her parents for instilling a love of giving and a hard work ethic in her since childhood.
“I was brought up to take a job on and keep going,” she said. “When I was growing up you could never use the word ‘bored’ because there was always plenty to do. Even today I don’t like to be around people who say they’re bored.”
She was surprised to receive a phone call informing her she had been named as an outstanding senior citizen, and says she just loves to keep busy.
Sukut has been involved with a wide variety of volunteer activities her entire life. Besides doing whatever she can to help others, some of her current activities include working with Maple Lake Senior Connections, Sams Quilting Club and Maple Manor Senior Building and Dining Site.
Next on her agenda is to work at The Free Store in Annandale, where she’s added her name to the organization’s list of volunteers.
Terry Marsh, who is from Buffalo, has also been involved with numerous organizations during his volunteer activities, including Fare For All, The Shriners, Buffalo Police Reserve, Special Olympics and Kids Wings. He enjoys giving his time and talents to help others in any way he can.
The purpose of the Wright County Outstanding Senior Citizen Program is to recognize that the senior citizen population is a valuable county resource as they continue to give back to the residents of area communities.
Sukut and Marsh will be honored for their accomplishments on senior day at the Wright County Fair in Howard Lake.
