Four of the top five county taxpayers in Sherburne County continue to be utility and energy-related companies.
A report released in April by the county auditor/treasurer’s office shows Xcel Energy (Northern States Power Company - MN) remains the top taxpayer in the county with a net tax capacity of $9,010,696.
Southern Minnesota Municipal Power, was next at $4,235,622.
Great River Energy was third at $1,009,992, followed by Minnegasco Property Accounting at $455,454.
JPM Capital (United Healthcare Data Center) was fifth with a net tax capacity of $373,636.
Total taxes paid by each business depends on each taxing jurisdiction’s tax rate. The county’s tax rate for 2017 is 52.116%, which includes the Regional Rail Authority levy. Each township, city and school also has its own tax rates, which are multiplied by the tax capacity to determine taxes payable.
Northern States Power and Southern Minnesota Municipal Power are also the top two taxpayers in the City of Becker, followed by Liberty Paper, Inc. with a tax capacity of $204,796. Next is Store Master Funding VII ($84,050) and Great River Energy ($73,542).
Inland Big Lake is at the top in the City of Big Lake with a tax capacity of $89,562. Riverwood Bank is second at $89,295 followed by Remmele Engineering at 85,764, CentraCare Health System ($61,416), Cargill Kitchens ($54,690) and Keller Lake Acquisitions (53,644).
Northern States Power is the top taxpayer in Becker Twp. with a net tax capacity of $76,854. R D Offutt Company is second at $70,558. VONCO II, LLC is next at $49,116 followed by Great River Energy ($30,446) and Vonco III ($23,080).
Nordic Investments (Minnesota Limited) is the biggest taxpayer in Big Lake Twp. with a net tax capacity of $123,210. Burlington Northern (BNSF) is next at $40,746. Minnegasco is next at $39,798, followed by (MLM) Midwest Lumber ($35,144), Northern States Power ($30,168) and Govesco Properties ($25,698).
Top taxpayers in surrounding townships and cities include BNSF in Clear Lake Twp. ($57,202); Sysco Acquisition in Haven Twp. ($203,287); Northern States Power in Orrock Twp. ($47,090); Great River Energy in Palmer Twp. ($52,038); John Gilyard in Santiago Twp. ($10,048) and Sherburne State Bank in Clear Lake City ($13,014).
