Three Bhs Students Capture Arts Awards In St. Cloud

Three Becker artists’ works were awarded prizes at the 37th Annual Visual Arts Minnesota High School Art exhibition and Competition in St. Cloud. One emerged as best in show!

Caitlynn Bush’s painting entitled, Can’t Feel the Burn, won best of show and she received the honor at Monday’s reception and awards ceremony at the Paramount in St. Cloud.

“I am ridiculously excited about this news,” said BHS Vice Principal Mark Kolbinger. “In my 16 years here, that (three award-winning students) has never happened for Becker as the competition is so tough (including work from arts magnet schools).”

Julia Abfalter took first place in the painting category with a dark, moody masterpiece entitled, Meet Me at Midnight. Madelyn Schmidt took third place in the same category with her spot-on depiction of the board game Monopoly.

The exhibition featured 131 artists from 17 school groups across Central Minnesota. Each school that participates is only allowed to enter 15 pieces of art so it is limited to the best works for each school.

The jurors included Bill Gorcica, a professor of art at SCSU and two student jurors, Maria Thompson and Jonathan Dorf, both students at the college.
