Developing a strong bond with your child, especially during the teen years, helps reduce the chances of engaging in risky behavior. It helps set the stage for preventing drug and alcohol use. The “Talk Early, Talk Often” campaign being spearheaded by the Sherburne County SUP Coalition hopes to help parents and other caring adults strengthen this bond by educating and empowering them to have ongoing conversations with the young people in their lives.
Some parents, despite their best efforts, will have a child who develops a substance use disorder. Figuring out if your child is using drugs or alcohol can be challenging. Many of the signs and symptoms are, at times, typical teen or young adult behavior.
If a teen starts behaving differently for no apparent reason – such as acting withdrawn, frequently tired or depressed, or hostile – it could be a sign they are developing a drug-related problem. Other possible signs include:
• A change in peer group
• Carelessness with grooming or physical appearance
• Preoccupation with drug-related lifestyle in music, clothing and posters
• Decline in academic performance
• Missing classes or skipping school
• Loss of interest in favorite activities
• Trouble in school or with the law
• Changes in eating or sleeping habits
• Deteriorating relationships with family members and friends
Addiction can be successfully treated to help young people stop abusing drugs and lead productive lives. Intervening early when you first spot signs of drug use in your teen is critical; don’t wait for your teen to become addicted before you seek help. However, if a teen is addicted, treatment is the next step (Source: Partnership for Drug-Free Kids).
