On July 16, at approximately 10:02 a.m., Big Lake police officers were dispatched to the 5000 block of Mitchell Rd. on a report of a suicidal male with a gun.
Big Lake Officers, along with Sherburne County Deputies, arrived on scene. Officers observed a male, Ronald Richter (Age 59 – Big Lake), sitting in a chair at the edge of the garage with a gun to his head, refusing to put it down. Richter told officers he intended to point a gun at law enforcement so police would shoot him.
Richter put the gun to his side, then pointed the gun directly at several officers. A short time later, Richter dropped the magazine from the gun and gave it to a family member. Richter was then taken into custody.
Richter was transported to a nearby hospital for an evaluation. Richter was charged by criminal complaint with three (3) counts of Felony 2nd Degree Assault.
