Officer Guy Chaffee of the Big Lake Police Dept. was dispatched to an intoxicated driver complaint at the Holiday Gas Station Sat., Nov. 16 at 1:30 a.m. The complainant reported that a male, later identified as Alec C. King (age 21 – Clear Lake) was seen in the store “stumbling and slurring his words.” King was observed by the complainant entering a 2007 GMC Pickup.
Officer Chaffee located the vehicle driven by King traveling on Lake St N. When Officer Chaffee attempted a traffic stop, King immediately fled northbound at a high rate of speed.
With lights and siren activated, Officer Chaffee continued to behind King. King left the residential area, and proceeded northbound on Co. Rd. 5 at speeds exceeding 100 MPH. King made a turn onto Co. Rd. 75, and eventually another turn onto a township road where he left his vehicle in a driveway. King traveled a total of 4.5 miles.
King exited his vehicle and fled on foot from the vehicle along the shore of Eagle Lake.
King was taken into custody by Sergeant Kucala, who had also arrived on the scene. After giving King commands to “stop running and get on the ground,” Sergeant Kucala tackled King. He was taken into custody and booked into the Sherburne County Jail.
King was found to have a prior DWI Offense in Sherburne County in 2016. Officer Chaffee obtained a search warrant for a blood sample for King to determine his blood alcohol content.
King was charged by criminal complaint with; Fleeing a Peace Officer - Vehicle (felony), 2nd Degree DWI – (gross misdemeanor). King’s 2007 GMC vehicle was administratively forfeited.
