The annual “Walk-A-Thon” fund-raiser at Clearview Elementary School will take place Wed., Oct. 14, with students walking outdoors (weather permitting) and doing other physical activities staff have set up for them during their music/art/phy ed periods during the day.
Students also get pledges from family and community members in order to raise funds for the program, 100% of the proceeds go towards funding school field trips, music programs, the “Gamelan” program of Indonesian music, visiting artists and the Family Fun Night programs, according to the Clearview newsletter “The View”.
As students bring in their pledges, they are also eligible for prizes. Any district parents or other adults interested in volunteering on Walk-A-Thon day should contract the school for more information.
Wed., Oct. 21, Clearview will host an “Anti-Bullying Day” program, noting that October is National Bullying Prevention month, a program that has been sponsored by the PACER organization since 2006. The event encourages students and staff to “take an active role in the bullying prevention movement,” according to the PACER website.
Clearview students are taught a “three-step” program to confront bullying and negative behavior in school that is called “Stop, Walk, Talk”. Students are encouraged to say “Stop” when they see others being bullied or other negative behavior. They are encouraged to “Walk” away when they encounter such negative situations personally, and finally to “Talk” to a teacher or other adult if the negative behavior continues.
Orange is the color for “Unity Day” Oct. 21, when students and staff are encouraged to wear orange as schools, communities and online participants are asked to join together to send a message of support, hope and unity on that day.
Speech clinician Jane Plath is heading up the activities for that day at Clearview. More information on the program is available in the school newsletter.
