Local resident rings in 100th New Year!

Becker resident Erma Cameron celebrated 100 years a few months ago.

This writer first met Erma last summer at Rebecca’s Cafe in Becker. She was with her son, Doyle, and a group of friends who had gathered for lunch to celebrate Erma’s 100th birthday.

Upon meeting Erma, this writer immdediately found her delightful. As the visit progressed, she shared many details about her interesting life story.

Erma was born in Seiling, Oklahoma in 1925. Her family moved to Texas during the Great Depression. They later moved to Espanola, New Mexico, where she attended a one room school house.

Erma moved to Sherburne County in 1973 when her family bought a small cabin on Lake Julia near Palmer. They built a house, a garage and a gazebo. They moved into the house in 1986.

Erma moved to Becker in 2003, after living near Palmer for three decades.

Erma says she has outlived three husbands. Erma and her first husband got married when he was on a three-day pass while serving in the military. After he passed away, Erma married again.

Erma’s second marriage was held at the Foley courthouse. Following the loss of her second husband, Erma met another wonderful man named Delbert. Erma decided it was time for a church wedding and tied the knot at Becker Baptist Church at the age of 80.

Erma has a strong faith in God. When asked what counsel she would share with younger folks, Erma shared: “Yesterday is gone. We can’t retrieve it. All we can do is repent of those things we know we’ve done wrong and aim to do better each day. Tomorrow is not ours yet. We have no guarantee of tomorrow; so it beehooves us to do the best we can - by the grace of God.”

Erma’s son, Doyle, lives with her in Becker. She says they get along well as long as he does what she wants.

“It’s so fun to be 100 that I’m sorry I didn’t do it sooner,” she quipped.

Erma is a mother to six children (five still alive - one infant son passed away). Erma is a gifted poet and has had poems published in The International Society Of Poets.

Erma’s positive attitude is contagious. As we head into a new year, this writer will try to follow some of Erma’s advice. Make an effort each day to be kind and grateful. Thank the Lord for all blessings and when any of us fall short, we will aim to do better going forward.

This world needs more Erma’s. What a blessing it has been to meet her! God bless her as she enters her 101st New Year.
