September Is National Library Card Sign Up Month

September is National Library Card Sign-Up month, and Great River Regional Library (GRRL) has joined forces with the American Library Association and libraries across the country to highlight the ways library cards change lives.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Library Card Sign-up Month, launched in 1987 to encourage all people, particularly children, to register for a library card.

Since then, thousands of public and school libraries collaborate each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that.

Libraries provide strong foundations for children starting at the earliest stages of development, and librarians are key players in educating families on the link between early literacy and future academic success.

GRRL branches offer a variety of programs year-round to stimulate an interest in reading and learning. Preschool storytimes expose young children to the joys of reading, while homework and research assistance for older children inspire strong academic success and pave the way for successful futures.

Libraries are thriving technology hubs offering high-quality internet access and numerous digital tools. In addition to books, magazines, DVDs, computers, games, software and other multimedia materials, libraries provide access to e-books and e-book readers.

GRRL libraries are frequently the first points of contact for community members with questions. From providing assistance to small business owners to programs about resources for those in need, libraries are changing lives through education.

Libraries are America’s great information equalizers – the only places people of all ages, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds can find and freely use such a diversity of resources.

And it all begins with a library card.
