Rothmeyer Gets 10 Years In Fatal Accident

A Clear Lake man who authorities say led police on a pursuit that ended in a fatal collision was sentenced Thursday.

Jason Jerome Rothmeyer was sentenced to over 10 years (128 months) in prison.

Rothmeyer pleaded guilty in August to one count of fleeing a peace officer and two counts of criminal vehicular operation.

According to a criminal complaint, officers received a call on Aug. 10, 2018, about a possibly intoxicated person leaving the Becker Pebble Creek Golf Club in a vehicle.

An officer was able to see a vehicle matching the description leaving the parking lot of the golf club.

The complaint said the officer followed the vehicle and witnessed it cross the fog line and centerline. When the officer turned on his lights and attempted to conduct a stop, the vehicle accelerated and attempted to flee the officer.

At one point during the chase, the suspect vehicle exceeded speeds of 100 mph, according to the complaint.

The complaint goes on to say the suspect vehicle then failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by a Ford pickup. One of the occupants was ejected from the truck.

After the collision, the driver of the suspect vehicle — later identified as Rothmeyer — exited the vehicle and began to run. Authorities had to tackle Rothmeyer according to the complaint.

The complaint said officers observed the smell of alcohol on Rothmeyer, as well as bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Rothmeyer failed a field sobriety test and preliminary breath test, according to the complaint. Blood was also drawn from the Rothmeyer for lab analysis.

The occupant of the Ford pickup who was ejected was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital. The complaint said the man — later identified as 18-year-old Kyle Scott Foley — was pronounced dead the next day at the hospital.
