Ready For School? Primary School

School starts Sept. 5 at 8 a.m. Students should not be in the building until 7:50 p.m. Dismissal time is 2:40 p.m.

Dale Christensen is the principal.

The BPS staff is anxiously awaiting the arrival of students and families for their assessment/conference days Sept. 4-5. Over the course of these two days, each student and family  will:

• Meet their new teacher and tour the classroom;

• Read and complete a benchmark assessment with the classroom teacher;

• Have their Lifetouch picture taken;

• Take care of business (emergency info, lunch accounts, headphones, etc.);

• Tour the building and become familiar with staff;

• Learn more about the expectations for their new grade level.

This time together will allow BPS teachers to learn a bit about ones child on an individual basis. It also provides the time for BPS to gather assessment data needed to address the individual learning needs of each student. BPS strongly believes this day will help staff, students, and families start the year off positively. If one has not yet had the opportunity to sign up for the child’s assessment/conference time, do so by calling the primary school office at 763-261-6330.

Parents may pay for hot lunches at the assessment/conference day. The lunch prices are $2.70 for primary students. All lunches are accounted through a family lunch account. The account is credited whenever a deposit is made and each time a child eats, the account is charged the correct amount. BPS asks each family make minimum deposits for two weeks at a time.

Parents may pay for mid-morning milk break for their students at the assessment/conference day. The milk break prices are $30 for 1/2 year or $60 for the full year. (Milk break is separate from the lunch account). Parents will need to pay for either half a year or the entire year.

Important communication from the school office and classroom teachers is sent home on a frequent basis with ones child. Teachers will alert parents to upcoming events, projects and announcements via newsletters, emails, or their website.

BPS says to take time each day to sit down with ones child and go through the papers that are in his or her school bag. Each child will have a clear plastic folder that will be the “VIP” (very important papers) folder. Please make sure the entire family reads through all the papers carefully. There may be papers in this folder that will need to be returned the next day. This helps to ensure that all parents/guardians will receive the appropriate information. This will also give one an opportunity to hear from ones child a review of the school day.

These folders will be available for purchase at the assessment/conference day.

During the school day, when the buildings are locked, parents and visitors are asked to press the silver call button near the main entrance. The school secretary will welcome you, ask ones name and the purpose of ones visit. Visitors must report directly to the office, sign in and receive a visitor’s badge. Each visitor must return to the office, check out and return the visitor’s badge upon leaving the building.

 It is also BPS’s policy for the office to call the classroom to notify the teacher when a student needs to leave during the school day. Extra efforts will help to make sure everyone is safe.

Parents can only access the Primary School drop-off and pick-up area from the one-way lane off of Third Street, across from Morris Street at the north end of the Bus Garage complex. Watch for signs. Primary students can be dropped off on the northeast end of the Primary School (next to the Football Field) between the hours of 7:50-8 a.m. and be picked up at the same location at the end of the day at 2:40 p.m. Parents should then exit on to Hancock Street. This is a drop-off area only, parents cannot park and walk students into the building. Parents who wish to walk into the school with their students will need to park in the large lot and cross at the crosswalks between the buses. Parents can drop-off and pick-up students on Third Street along the curb on the north side of the street (the school side).

Students can cross the Intermediate School play-ground and enter the Primary School at the main door. If one is picking ones child up early from school, please send a note with ones child and sign them out in the office.

School supply lists can be found on the district website. School supplies have been donated and if ones family needs help with school supplies, contact the Primary School Office at 763-261-6330.

Adults play an important role in the lives of children and there are many adults in the Becker community who have graciously given of their time to volunteer at Becker Primary. The students have been very fortunate to have positive role models come into the school to share their talents, or to listen to a child read. As adults in today’s society, one understands the district’s mandate to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone on the school campus. As a part of the BPS volunteer program, they ask that all volunteers complete a simple online application found on the district website.
