Ready For School? Intermediate School

School starts Sept. 5 at 8 a.m. BIS’s days are extremely busy, so they need all students in their classrooms by 8 a.m. Keep in mind that students should not be in the build- ing until 7:50 a.m. Students who are dropped off early will be supervised on the BIS playground at 7:40 a.m.

Nathaniel Boyer is the principal and Joey Waters  is the assistant principal.

The Intermediate School will hold two assessment/conference days to kick off the new school year. These days are scheduled for Sept. 3 and 4. Over the course of these two days, each student and family will:

• Meet their new teacher and tour the classroom;

• Read and complete a reading assessment with the classroom teacher;

• Have their Lifetouch picture taken;

• Take part in a hearing and vision screening;

• Take care of business (emergency info, lunch accounts, headphones, etc.);

• Tour the building and become familiar with staff;

• Learn more about the expectations for their new grade level.

This time together will allow the school’s teachers to learn a bit about your child on an individual basis. It also provides the time for the school to gather assessment data needed to address the individual learning needs of each student. BIS strongly believes this day helps staff, students, and families start the year off positively. If one has not yet had the opportunity to sign up ones child’s assessment/conference time, go to www.becker.k12.mn.us and click on Skyward Family Access under the student tab. One may also call the BIS office at 261-4504.

BIS values strong home-school communication. Communication is an invaluable tool for ensuring individual student success. Teachers will alert parents to upcoming events, projects, and announcements via newsletters, emails and their website. When questions or concerns arise, please contact ones child’s teacher. Most issues can be resolved by working together with ones child’s teacher. When you need additional help, one can always reach the principal or assistant principal at 763-261-4504.

BIS will continue to support the use of iPads in the 2019-2020 school year. With grades four and five using iPads at a higher frequency, students will be charged to use them starting in 2019-2020. Insurance for iPad’s will be payable online only. To make this more user friendly, the BIS will have a kiosk set up on assessment day at the intermediate school for parents/guardians to take care of their payments. Any questions that parents have regarding the iPad program, should go directly to the community link on the Becker Public School website.

School supply lists can be found on the district website at www.becker.k12.mn.us. If ones family needs help with school supplies, please contact the intermediate school office at 261-4504.

For the safety of BIS’s students, during school hours all visitors must enter through the front doors of the building, sign in at the office and get a visitor badge. Note that this is also our policy for the office to call the classroom to notify the teacher when a student needs to leave during the school day.

As part of the school’s  continued efforts to ensure the physical, social and emotional well-being of all students, a wellness center is available at Becker High School. The wellness center is staffed daily with professional therapist/counselors to aid students dealing with mental health issues. Students must be referred prior to having access to the wellness center. Talk to a school counselor or Assistant Principal Brian Baloun, for more information.
